The Boston Beach House, La Peña, Tarifa
A contemporary pre – fab beach house perfectly positioned at just 250 metres, as the crow flies, from one of the best beaches in Europe. Yet at the same time very secluded - a place of real tranquillity - due to its location within the Natural Alcornocales Park. The attractions of Tarifa town are 3km away, once a Moorish stronghold the town retains these influences, but is now better known for its international ambience and world famous wind and kite surfing.
The two houses at ‘El Cancho’ - so named for the razor-ridge outcrops that run through its one-hectare plot - are staggered down its grassy hillside and nestle in an amphitheatre of rock topped with jagged pinnacles and native pine forest. Positioned high-above the well-known Hurricane Hotel, El Cancho, offers possibly the best view in the area, out to the Straits - where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea meet - and with the minarets of Tangiers twinkling only 14km away.
This is a rare opportunity to experience forward-looking living in a blissful setting where the local farmer still herds his goats around the hillside.
All the way from Boston, USA, this wooden house, far simpler in design but equally as stylish and no less appealing than its neighbour the Wallpaper House, is the favourite for the romantic getaway crowd. North east facing it looks out to Tarifa town and Playa de Los Lances, this different perspective helps the smaller house retain its privacy and the large shaded terrace is an idyllic spot for sun bathing and reading a good book.
The house is accessed by a bridge that leads to the house. 30 metres from the car parking spot over a country track and running stream.
Although more popular with couples the house does sleep 4, in 1 double bed and 2 single beds (the sleeping arrangements have been changed since the photos were taken), and suits families with children over 5 equally as well. The house is open-plan with minimal decor, a simplistic, contemporary vibe; the two bedrooms are separated by a bathroom (shower) and can be cordoned off from the main area by pretty white linen curtains.
All the beds have good quality hard mattresses and are invitingly made up with crisp white embroidered bed linen (duvets); bath and hand towels are provided for, as are large beach towels.
The bathroom has a hot water shower (gas fuelled) and there is also an outdoor shower for the more hardy naturalists, and which children seem to love.
While the houses may be new builds, this is a real back to nature experience, with real eco-friendly ideals. Solar panels (photovoltaic) provide electricity for lighting and power, whilst gas heats water directly from the mountain spring. We are wholly dependent on natural energies, so currently without sunshine you may find yourself without power. However what we can promise is a limitless supply of tea lights and twinkling stars!
El Cancho is completely self-catering, the kitchen is not sophisticated - with a large gas fridge/freezer and 2-hob gas cooker - but it is equipped with all the necessary cooking implements and crockery.
There is a gas BBQ (with lid) where the majority of cooking is done. The kitchen area has a round table and chairs to seat 4, breakfast bar and stools, and there are plenty of spots for eating out on the decking (shaded and sunny) made comfortable with huge day cushions, outdoor furniture and 2 sun loungers.
Not to be missed is The Boston Beach House sun-downer spot on the rocks for the best panoramic view in the area.

In winter there is limited access to the property and one has to enter on foot. There is a bridge at the back of the house, one can park right by this and walk the 10m to the house. Please do not try and enter the property in a sports car or similar vehicle even in summer, as the track to the houses is not in good repair. I would recommend a car that is slightly higher off the ground, such as a Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner something of this kind or even just the simple Fiat Panda. Family estate cars can sometimes be very low to the ground and I would definitely never rent a sports car they do not suit the Tarifa roads.
50% non-refundable deposit to be paid when confirming the booking. The remaining 50% should be paid by bank transfer 8 weeks prior to arrival
IMPORTANT NOTICE: We do not recommend The Boston Beach house to families with young children under five, as the house is raised on 1.5metre stilts and the terrace is unfenced with a drop off down to the grass below.

Awesome place to stay for a couple or maybe a couple with a kid. Although there are two double beds, you're essentially in one big, partitioned room so there's virtually no privacy. The only door is on the bathroom!
For a couple its wonderful. You're up on the hillside with views over to Africa and down to Tarifa beach. You feel incredibly secluded and the only people we saw were Cat and Ben who own/run the place and the local shepherd chasing some stray goats! Its all solar powered so our evenings were spent in the half light illuminated by lots of little tea lights; we could have had the lights on, but we just chose not too!

Robert, Anita and Grace loved the beach house, its fabulous views, clanking goats and marauding nocturnal cows! We would love to come back and have our picnic breakfasts on the ridge!

This is the kind of place that makes you want to change the way you live. Thanks for opening my eyes.
This is one of the nicest places I’ve ever stayed. The setting is beautiful and the house us full of charm and character and includes everything you could possibly want for a fantastic break away.
